SSN Out of the Classroom
What’s your 810?
As part of an initiative to further secure students’ sensitive information until a permanent replacement of the Social Security Number as the primary identifier is established, Social Security Numbers will no longer be used in the classrooms.
Effective Fall Semester 2007, Social Security Numbers will no longer be listed on class rolls and grade rolls. These documents will include the nine digit portion of the ID number on the UGACard that begins with 810.
For example, with a 16 digit number of: 627541 810 043 856 0, the nine digit personal identifier is 810 043 856. Note that it does not include the last digit of the 16 digit number.
Students should use this number on test sheets and other classroom assignments. The Social Security Number should no longer be used for any classroom requirement or activity.
Below is a list of Frequently Asked Questions about this initiative. If you don’t find the answer to your question here, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of the Registrar at reghelp@uga.edu.
FAQs:
· Why is the university replacing the SSN with the 810 number on class rolls and grade rolls?
The university is concerned about protecting students from identify theft. This effort is the first of many changes as UGA moves to further protect its data and resources.
· Why aren’t you replacing all uses of the SSN with the 810 number?
We are still researching the next step in moving away from the use of the SSN as the primary identifier.
· Will students use their 810 number to access OASIS?
No. They will continue to use their SSN.
· Will students still be able to access WebCT?
Yes. Students will continue to log in with their MyID (first part of their UGA email address).
· Where can students locate their 810 if they don’t remember it or have lost their UGACard?
Students can look up their 810 number in OASIS. On the Main Menu, click on View UGACard Number.
· Is the 810 number replacing the SSN in all parts of the student system?
No. It is only replacing the SSN on class rolls and grade rolls. This, of course, means that students will now place their 810 number (instead of their SSN) on test sheets and assignments. This is a very narrowly focused initiative.
· Can instructors post grades in a public setting using all or part of the 810?
No. Since this is considered the student ID for class rolls and grade rolls, no part of it may be used for the posting of grades in a public setting.
· What else can be done to protect students from identity theft?
All academic and administrative areas of campus are urged to ask for only the last 4 digits of a student’s Social Security Number on forms or in person. Students should protect their SSN by not sharing it with their friends and by shredding documents that contain their SSN.
