Regents’ Writing and Reading Skills Requirement
All students receiving an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia are required to satisfy minimum requirements in both reading and writing skills, as set forth by the Board of Regents. Students must satisfy both the reading and writing components to satisfy the Regents' Requirement. These components may be satisfied through the Regents' Test or through exemptions. Students meeting certain benchmarks may exempt one or both portions of the Regents’ Requirement. For more information regarding exemptions see http://www.reg.uga.edu/or.nsf/html/regentstest on the web site of the Office of the Registrar.
Registration requirements.
Following are the registration requirements relative to the Regents’ Requirement.
Students who have not satisfied the Writing and Reading Requirement. Registration for any semester after which the students will have earned their 45th semester hour of credit (excluding institutional credit) must include Regents' Skills course work in reading (RGTR 0198) and/or essay (RGTE 0199).
Students who have taken the Regents' Test but not yet received the results. Because test results are not received until the end of a semester, students who will have earned their 45th hour of credit and who have taken the Regents’ Test during the current term are required to register for the Regents' Skills course(s) (RGTR 0198 and/or RGTE 0199) for the next semester. In such cases, the Regents' Skills course or courses will be automatically dropped from the students’ next semester’s schedule if one or both portions of the Test are satisfactorily completed.
Example: A student has earned 40 hours of credit by the end of the Fall Semester. She is enrolled for 12 hours of credit for the Spring Semester. Because she will have earned her 45th hour by the end of Spring Semester, the student will be required to register for Regents' Skills course work for the upcoming Summer and or/Fall Semester. She does, however, sit for the Test during Spring Semester and passes both parts. When the successful Test results are received, she will be automatically dropped from the Regents' Skills course(s) for the upcoming Summer and/or Fall. If fees are affected by such a drop students must obtain a new fee invoice before payment.
Transfer Student Requirements. Rules regarding Regents' Skills course work differ slightly for transfer students from University System of Georgia (USG) institutions and students who transfer to UGA from institutions outside the USG.
Students from University System of Georgia institutions. Students transferring to UGA from USG programs which require the courses will be subject to all Regents’ Requirements as detailed above.
Example: In Spring Semester a student transfers to UGA from Middle Georgia College with 60 hours of transfer credit without having satisfied the Regents' Requirement. During this student’s first term of attendance, he must register for the Regents' Skills courses and take the Regents' Test that semeseter.
Students from institutions outside the USG that are not subject to Regents' Requirements. Students transferring from schools outside the USG, including out-of-state schools, and who have earned 30 or more hours of college-level credit must satisfy the Regents' Requirement no later than their second semester of enrollment. In subsequent semesters, they will be subject to all provisions of this policy as detailed above for non-transfer students.
Regents’ Requirement status notification.
Notification of the status of the Regents’ Requirement is made via an OASIS registration system warning screen. Students should discuss Regents’ Requirements with their advisors.
Preparation for the Regents' Test.
Practice Reading Tests and a comprehensive list of essay topics can be found on the Board of Regents website.
Note: International students may be eligible to take an alternative form of the examination offered by the Writing Center. All other requirements will still apply. For more information on the alternative form of the examination contact: Dr. David Payne, English Department, 260 Park Hall, (706) 542-2158. The e-mail address is: dhpayne@uga.edu.
