University of Georgia Course Credits for International Baccalaureate Diploma Completion
In recognition of the fact that a strong predictor of college success is a rigorous high school curriculum, the institutions in the University System of Georgia (USG) will award academic credit for appropriate courses in the USG curriculum for work completed as part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. Students obtaining designated end of course assessment scores can view UGA’s equivalency of IB courses.
Both Standard Level (college preparatory) and High Level (college comparable) courses will be considered for credit for students who were awarded the IB diploma. UGA will award credit only for High Level courses to students who did not earn the diploma, but were awarded the certificate for completion of a specific subject area.
This policy is in effect for all students entering UGA in summer 2008 and beyond. Both resident and non-resident students are eligible to receive credit.
Credit will be awarded only once for the same subject, whether the credit is earned by examination, joint enrollment, transfer credit or course credit. Credit is awarded in the order it was chronologically earned, with the most recent instance counting towards the degree. If duplicate credit exists among AP, IB, JT or Departmental Exam, the exam yielding the most credit will be awarded.
The total college course credits awarded for IB assessments may not exceed 24.
Appeals:
A student may opt not to accept credits if he or she sees that acceptance of credits may disadvantage him or her. Further, if a student believes that the assessment of his or her work from the IB Diploma Program and subsequent awarding of credits for such is in error, he or she may file an appeal with the appropriate department chair and request a re-assessment. As with other academic matters, if the issue is not satisfactorily resolved at the department level, the student may then appeal to the dean of the respective college, with a final appeal to the vice president for academic affairs, whose decision in the matter will be final.
