Change in Rain Plans for Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony

The Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony will be held in Sanford Stadium rain or shine. Only if the weather is determined to be severe will the ceremony be moved to Stegeman Coliseum and will be divided into two separate ceremonies.

Severe weather is defined as rain accompanied by high winds, thunder and lightning.

Information on the Severe Weather plan may be found here.

If it is raining, but not declared Severe Weather, there will be no processional and students should report directly to their assigned seating areas on the field. Each student will be provided with a poncho to wear.

The decision for implementing either the Rain Plan (in Sanford, but no processional) or Severe Weather Plan (moved to Stegeman Coliseum in two separate ceremonies) will be made by 6:30 am on Saturday, May 10. The information will be placed on the UGA home page no later than 7 am. Major local radio stations will be provided the information; however, please keep in mind that many radio stations rely solely on computerized programming on weekends and thus special announcements are not made.

We encourage guests to watch the weather forecast, check the UGA home page on Saturday morning, and dress accordingly.

Regardless of the weather, the ceremony will be televised on Channel 15 (Educational Access) and will be streamed on the internet. Visitors to campus may view the ceremony in the Mahler Auditorium in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel and in the movie theatre in the Tate Student Center.

Graduation with Honors
Criteria for graduation with honors are determined by the Educational Affairs Committee of the University Council and are described in the undergraduate bulletin.

Final honors designations for Summa, Magna, and Cum Laude as noted on the diploma and transcript will be based on the overall averages of 3.90, 3.70, and 3.50 respectively. Overall averages include grades at UGA as well as grades received at all previous academic institutions. To allow for current term grades, calculations for honors tassels and the commencement program only are based upon a current overall GPA of 3.85 for Summa Cum Laude, 3.65 for Magna Cum Laude, and 3.45 for Cum Laude.

Anticipated undergraduate students graduating with honors wear an honors tassel:
· Summa Cum Laude: red, silver, and black tassel
· Magna Cum Laude: red and silver tassel
· Cum Laude: red and black tassel

Diplomas
Once final grades for the semester are received, each individual school and college reviews the records of each candidate for graduation to verify that all requirements have been met. The Office of the Registrar is notified when this process is complete and authorizes the printing of the diplomas. Diplomas are mailed to graduates at their permanent or diploma addresses approximately six weeks after commencement. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the Office of the Registrar has the correct mailing address.

The information printed on diplomas is summarized below:
· Undergraduates with one major:
Your degree, major, University honors, and graduation date will be reflected on the diploma.

· Undergraduates with multiple majors:
If you complete the requirements for multiple majors, with the same degree, simultaneously, you will receive one diploma reflecting the degree, multiple majors, University honors, and graduation date.

If you complete the requirements for multiple majors with different degrees, simultaneously, you will receive two diplomas. Each diploma will reflect the respective degree, major, University honors, and graduation date.

If you complete the requirements for multiple majors during different semesters, you will receive a diploma for each. The individual diplomas will reflect the degree, major, University honors, and the graduation date corresponding to the major.

If Severe Weather is Declared:

Severe weather is defined as rain accompanied by high winds, thunder, and lightning.

If severe weather is declared, the graduation exercises will be moved to Stegeman Coliseum. The decision to implement the rain plan will be made by 6:30 a.m. the morning of the ceremony and will be announced on the UGA home page (www.uga.edu) and on the Athens radio stations. Since seating at Stegeman Coliseum is limited, the graduation ceremony will be held in two sessions. There will be no processional for students. Graduates should enter the Coliseum through either Entrance A (red door on northeast corner) or Entrance D (red door on southeast corner) and report directly to the appropriate seating area on the floor of the Coliseum and be in their seats by the time the ceremony is scheduled to begin.
