How to calculate Your HOPE GPA:

Step 1: Contact your HOPE Counselor in the Office of Student Financial Aid (2nd floor of the Holmes/Hunter Academic Building on North Campus). The HOPE Counselor will explain your current HOPE GPA and the regulations that affect when your GPA will be reevaluated.

Step 2: From the Office of the Registrar, you will get your HOPE hours attempted, hours for average, and grade points. These will be used as the starting point for calculating your HOPE GPA.

Step 3: Using your current HOPE hours attempted, hours for average, and grade points, you can project how your current grades will affect your GPA. Determine which of your currently enrolled courses will count in your HOPE hours for average. A list of which courses are included can be found above.

Step 4: Determine what grades you expect to make in your current courses.

Step 5: Determine the point value of the grades you expect to make. Remember that HOPE does not recognize +/- grades. Point values are as follows: A or A– gets 4 points; B+, B or B– gets 3 points; C+, C or C– gets 2 points; D gets 1 point; and F or WF gets 0 points. Remember, grades of S, U, I, NR, ER, V, K, WP, WM, or W do not count in HOPE GPA.

Step 6: Multiply the hours for average of each course by the point value for the grade you expect to earn in that course.

Step 7: Add the currently enrolled hours for average to your previous hours for average total. Add the grade points generated by your expected grades in currently enrolled courses to your previous grade point total.

Step 8: Divide your new projected HOPE grade points by your new projected HOPE hours for average. Truncate the result to 2 decimal places. This is your new projected HOPE GPA.

If you need to convert Quarter Hours to Semester Hours:
Multiply the quarter hours by 2 then divide by 3: (Quarter Hours * 2) /3
For example: 45 quarter hours = 30 semester hours  or:(45*2)/3 = 30

Other HOPE regulations that may affect your eligibility:

  • HOPE Scholarship will only pay for 127 hours.
  • HOPE will only pay until the first bachelors or professional degree has been earned.
  • HOPE will not pay for remedial course hours after the Summer 2011 term.
